The GreenFriends Farm began as a challenge to plant a thousand fruit trees on the overgrazed land of a former cattle ranch west of Oakland, California. Now, half way to meeting that number, it has become an educational center for cutting-edge agriculture and a beautiful retreat location.
The tree planting project at Amma's MA Center in Castro Valley CA. The MA Center is the US headquarters for the international humanitarian and spiritual activities of Mata Amritanandamayi (known as Amma). The 167-acre grounds also serve as an educational hub for the Bay Area through demonstration of exemplary sustainable practices in reforestation, water catchment, and orchard culture. Drawn by the site's beauty, accessibility by public transportation, and the center's uncompromising dedication to using all proceeds to fund international humanitarian aid projects, hundreds of volunteers have joined together in service here to plant the orchards and reforest the hillsides.
