In 1981 Norman Mailer came to the University of Munich (Ludwig Maximilian Universität München) to speak to students in my Mailer seminar at the American Studies Institute. I invited him to come to Munich so that we could shoot a documentary. . After getting time off from acting in Milos Foman's movie, Ragtime, shooting in London, Mailer flew to Munich where we net him at the airport with a camera crew.
During the intense four day shoot, he lectured to students in my seminar, visited a few sites including Berchtesgaden where we shot in a Gasthaus below the Obersalzburg, Hitler's former hangout, and went boating on the Königsee. Mailer gave according to his own account, "one of the longest and most intense interviews of my life." Actually it was a series of interviews that took place over four days. Mailer talks about writing, politics, sex, boxing, Marilyn Monroe, and filmmaking. Without a doubt - Mailer at his best.
