Finding your Compass’ is a project which explores a creative road to recovery from depression. The main focus of the project is on recovery.
Founded by film maker Fiona Geilinger and dance artist and researcher Dr. Rosaria Gracia, the project was conceived out of the need to explore the various stages of depression, and to present a platform onto the next step of recovery, whilst promoting positive mental health messages.
The first pilot project, which ran from January to May (2014), explored experiences around depression. It was supported by data collected through a combination of literature review, focus groups and experiential artistic workshops.
The pilot culminated in a film telling the story of six women, through dance and drawing, in a message of hope. It is intended to raise awareness around depression, to reduce the stigma around it and to communicate valuable experiences to support other people that may be going through the same process.
The voluntary participants, all with experience of depression and anxiety, were a mixture of self-referrals and GP referrals.
