Over a thousand cyclists staged a massive protest in Antwerp on April 30th to show their disagreement with the new mobility vision of the city council. By putting cars first and cyclists last, a lot of people in Antwerp are disappointed. They feel that their city is becoming a car-city instead striving to become a bike-friendly city, such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
The protest was triggered by a call of the city council asking cyclists to stay away from one of the busiest roads in the city. A road that runs through a high populated area and has a lot of stores, schools, a concert hall, restaurants and even two bike repair shops.
Instead of creating bike friendly streets, the council is opting for a city that tries to cater to all forms of transportation... and even returning to the 20th century with car-focused policies.
So we protested! :)
