***WORLD PREMIER AT THE PORTOBELLO FILM FESTIVAL, LONDON, 31st AUGUST 2014***
A woman descends into the Underworld to confront her sister, Death, and to bring back her unborn child.
In this experimental short by Scottish Borders based video-artists / musicians, Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian (aka The Bird And The Monkey), Orphine slips between borders, between the realms of the living and the dead, consciousness and the dream. Personal history is filtered through the lens of mythology, one woman becomes Everywoman.
This short film, completed in May 2014, grew out of a video-art installation which Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian were commissioned to produce for the Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival in Hawick, Scotland, in April 2014. It was mostly shot on a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera and edited in iMovie.
The storyline – a concentrated Epic, at just over 10 minutes - draws both on the autobiographical and on mythology: particularly the cuneiform tales of Sumerian deity, Inanna, the classic myths of ancient Greece and Rome, and modern reinterpretations in the cinema of Ingmar Bergman and Jean Cocteau, the art of Louise Bourgeois and the Surrealists, the writing of James Joyce, the Symbolist Poets, the Beat writers and the Magic Realists.
