This short film was created following the purchase of David Bade's painting entitled Wannabe On by Museum Jan Cunen in 2011.
Bade, alternately residing on the island of Curaçao and in Zaandam, rose to fame in the early 1990s with his black and white caricature drawings. Soon afterwards, he started working on large scale, colourful paintings, depicting human figures, animals and fantasy creatures. Occassionaly, he also uses appropriated imagery for his paintings, such as photographs from a newspaper.
Bade shares his views on art and the art world, society and politics through his brightly coloured, elaborate paintings. Bade's artistic practice is also marked by a strong sense of social commitment, which is clearly reflected in his frequent collaboration with young people, whether art students or not. In 2006, Bade founded the Instituto Buena Bista (IBB), an art institute on the island of his birthplace Curaçao, offering preparatory training for young artists. This film shows Bade at work in his studio, as well as on location, working on a project with a group of students.
