The future of Winnipeg’s all-electric, zero emissions public transit is right on track.
This prototype bus – developed and tested through the partnership of New Flyer Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Manitoba Hydro, the Manitoba government and Red River College – has just finished a successful year of operation tests in what was Winnipeg’s worst winter in over a century.
Now, in partnership with the City of Winnipeg, four more electric buses are being produced that will be added to the Winnipeg Transit fleet.
Red River College was instrumental in the prototype bus’ progression at the College’s Electric Vehicle Technology & Education Centre (EVTEC)[blogs.rrc.ca/ar/focus-areas/electric-vehicles/]. At EVTEC, staff, students and instructors worked on numerous aspects of the electric bus project; from the development of the of the electric charging system, to the integration of the battery packs for the new buses, to assistance in the demonstration phase of the project.
It’s all part of the College’s history of innovating, promoting and performing applied research in the sustainable transportation sector.
