Qi Visualizer is a solo project by Yuan-Yi Fan, 2014.
Detailed documentation can be found here:
“Qi Visualizer” is an interactive installation that translates ineffable dialogues of the heart with the body into a collective poetry via audience participation. Audience can participate by uploading their pulse spectrograms using mobile biometrics.
Qi is an ancient concept of life energy in various cultures and pulse-examination is one of the techniques to translate tactile perception of pulsation into poetic descriptions of pulse morphology. Inspired by the poetic descriptions of pulse morphology and the elegant harmonic pulse spectrum, my Form of Resonance series (2010 – Present) addresses the link between Qi and harmonics by translating the data into visual, sonic, and spatial studies. I believe spectrogram is the most effective visual language to invoke broader perception of Qi across cultures and disciplines.
Significance of this project may be conceived as a new process shifting tactile-textual translations in pulse examination to imaging-visual transformations of collective spectrograms visualization via audience participation. Similar to voiceprint, a heart rate harmonic signature in a spectrogram is seen as an artistic interpretation of Qi in this installation.
Qi Visualizer app is available on the App Store,
You can participate by tweeting your pulse spectrogram @Qi_Visualizer,
