Animals are the subjects of this documentary, but they are presented without the conventions of a wildlife show. "Looking At Animals" examines the ways humans relate to animals in zoos and aquariums. Animal representations in the media are ubiquitous in a variety of genres. The nature documentary attempts to map animal behavior at the risk of reducing them to a set of coherent patterns for a human audience to absorb. Paradoxically, these attempts to understand only result in a distanced encounter. "Looking At Animals" points to the desire for and consequences of anthropomorphism and offers a different way to experience the animal. Through observational footage of animals in zoos and aquariums, I shift perspectives between the observer and the observed.
