The era of “digital design” is over, this is not a declaration against computation but a question and understanding of ongoing transformations in architectural theory and material culture.
Ill.Mannered focuses on the feedback between physical and digital realms. The project does not discard the digital or analog as the next step in evolution of architectural theory, but rather seeks to combine them into a method that can utilize their strengths simultaneously.
Through the use of Robot House, Ill.Mannered is a platform for freeform fabrication. In order to attack multiple problems of tooling, preform, shaping forces, material intelligence, and feedback; a process and resultant framework was produced.
The latest chapter of Ill.Mannered attempts to address the procedural nature of feedback between digital simulation and physical result. That is, the workflow of testing precomposed tests in robot house against what digital simulation was not fast enough to exploit observations in real time. The result was a number of interface developments that allowed for both digital precomposition and real time adjustments/developments to occur. With the development of a combinatory workspace, Ill.Mannered pushes a step closer towards a combined methodology of both “real space” and “fake space”, indistinguishable as either but perhaps, ultimately as a third.
