The Belk Scholarship allowed Whitney White Som-Pimpong to explore different career paths both in the U.S. and abroad. Using her Belk stipends she spent a summer interning for Scholastic in New York and a winter break studying business culture in Taiwan. She majored in anthropology and was involved in the Student Government Association, the diversity coordinating board, the Black Student Coalition, and Engage for Change. By senior year she wasn’t completely sure where her career interests stood, but with encouragement and support from past Belk scholars who worked in consulting she applied for and received an offer from Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm.
Since working at Bain, she has held consulting and project management positions in Atlanta’s mayoral office, at an e-commerce center, and at a public policy consulting firm. She has also started her own business, Afara Global, which helps companies expand their businesses to Africa.
