ΟΝ DEATH miniDV, B/W, 6’24”,2007
Video work based on the homonym poem of Giorgos V. Makris.
A seven year old boy drifts around the city during an election period. While reciting the poem “On Death”, he personifies the lost “Others” of History: the forgotten ones.
The video is shot during the September’s 2007 parliamentary elections with documentary shots during the two main political parties’ massive public speeches.
I chose this poem, of an unknown “minor” poet, because it gives voice, via a fictional narrative ego, to the lost “Others” of History: the forgotten ones. Its' heavy, misanthropic style, acquires an almost unexpected lightness and depth, when it is recited by a child that “has not yet perfected and adulterated language”.*
My son, seven years old at the time, is performing in the video, generously offering, the required level of diction.
The poem was written by George V. Makris , on February 1943, during the Nazi’s occupation.
* This is characteristically quoted in WRITINGS by E.H.Gonatas, regarding the love of Makris for the way the children talk. E.H.Gonatas, Introductive Note, GIORGOS V.MAKRIS WRITINGS, page 18, published by “Hestia Bookstore”, Athens, Greece,1986.
