Certain chemical reactions occur in an oscillatory manner and they can produce beautiful patterns. Some of their properties can be explored with cellular automata.

Here I used Houdini's voxels rather than 2 dimensional cells. The algorithm (VEX) is very adaptable and can take into account various types and levels of neighbourhood and distance metrics. It's reasonably fast with most of the animations here taking a second a frame or so.

I find that in the majority of scenarios the patterns with a deep 3rd dimension are not all that striking. A few do evolve nicely and I included a lovely spherical and cubic example.
