Abstract for this talk:
Industrially DNA sequencing technology is undergoing a multistage revolution in which modestly parallel sequencers based on size separation are being replaced by massively parallel sequencers based on sequencing-by-synthesis. First wave devices rely on clustered amplification of the DNAs to be sequenced; but, second wave devices now beginning to enter the market, directly sequence individual DNA molecules. Advanced devices of this type operate by detecting base incorporations in real time during continuous replication of single DNA molecules. These sequencers are among the first commercial architectures that operate through individual molecules. Beyond their immediate use in sequencing, it is interesting to consider if (how) these technologies can be applied to information processing or molecular fabrication.
