Star Wars Suite.
The world's first remotely conducted orchestra
Anniversary Concert - Saturday, September 6th, 2008
Since their beginnings, the Dresden Sinfoniker have attracted much attention with their spectacular projects. Whether performing with the Pet Shop Boys from the balconies of an East German high-rise, giving Rammstein's songs an orchestral touch or playing a whole evening of oriental music, the Dresden Sinfoniker continue to impress their audiences. To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the innovative orchestra came up with an ingenious way to mark the occasion: The orchestra with the remote-conductor!
In a live satellite link-up with Dresden, conductor Michael Helmrath conducted the orchestra live from London. With the assistance of an organ grinder, he performed the Star Wars Overture. Both musicians where be shown on screen in Dresden’s Kulturpalast from where the Dresden Sinfoniker performed with them. The audience in Dresden has been able to watch Michael Helmrath in his role as remote-conductor. The people of London, however, have simply seen him and his organ grinder as 2 buskers on the city streets.
After this futuristic beginning, the Estonian conductor, Olari Elts, assumed Michael Helmrath‘s role live in Dresden and continued to lead the audience through the rest of the thrilling programme.
