Makoto Fujimura will continue his lecture series on “Art, Love, and Beauty” with this 5th live broadcast. Former professor of Theology at Baylor University and founder of the Theology Studio, Peter M. Candler, will be lecturing on how "Beauty Will Make the World."
Candler will touch upon the metaphysics of beauty through one strand of Christian reflection that has attempted to think about it. His intention is to offer a non-expert grammar for thinking and talking about how artistic practice might relate to the God who creates the world from nothing. Candler will reference Dostoevsky's subtle notion suggesting that beauty will save the world and reveal its reason of how beauty made and makes the world. Human beings, by their participation in the being of God, participate in his creation of the world (which is not something that happened once, long ago). According to Thomas Aquinas, we are “co-creators” with God, which is a claim that depends on those earlier claims about creation ex nihilo, the real distinction, participated being, and so on.
