In May 2014, international human rights organization, Global Exchange presented María Estela Barco Huerta with the International Human Rights Award at the 12th Annual Human Rights Awards. The Award was presented by Carleen Pickard, of Global Exchange.
María Estela Barco Huerta is a prominent anti-GMO activist who has played a leading role in organizing Agro-Ecology Learning Exchanges in Chiapas, Mexico. Ms. Barco works diligently to safeguard the way of life and livelihoods of indigenous people, as well as create a working alternative to industrial agriculture. DESMI is a strong partner of IDEX - International Development Exchange - based in San Francisco and an ally of Global Exchange.
Also honored that evening were the Cuban Five with the People's Choice Award, the first Award they have received in the United States. Charlie Cobb and Phillip Agnew accepted the Domestic Human Rights Award for the Freedom Schools.
