The work of Natacha Nisic (born in Grenoble in 1976) continually explores the invisible, even magical relationship between images, words, interpretation, symbol and ritual. Her work interweaves links between stories, accounts of the past and the present, to reveal the complexities of the relationship between what is shown and what is hidden, the spoken and the unspoken. Natacha Nisic, who was awarded residencies at the Villa Kujoyama in 2001 and the Villa Medici in 2007, calls into question the nature of the image through various media: Super 8, 16 mm, video, photography and drawing. Her fixed and moving images function as substrata of memory, memory torn between its value as proof and its loss, and are all statements about the status of images and the possibilities of representation.
In this video portrait, french artist Natacha Nisic comments on three video installations that were presented at the Jeu de Paume until 26 January 2014. All of these works deal with issues of the strange and alien, the strength of the ritual, the invisible. Her oldest work, "e", was filmed in the region of Fukushima one year after the earthquake of 2008. Natacha Nisic reports of this event in a video installation on three screens, which combines spectacular images of the territory (the earthquake had opened a huge rift in the mountains), and interviews with residents. The artist was again visited the area in 2013, one year after the double disaster of the tsunami and the nuclear power plant, to shoot the video "f ». This film does not include evidence but shows traces of the disaster within the same territory, thanks to a device consisting of a tracking and vertical mirrors. Natacha Nisic also comments on "Andrea talk", a video installation produced especially for the exhibition at the Jeu de Paume, which tells the conversion to shamanism of a young Bavarian woman, Andrea Kalff, by the most famous Korean shaman, Kim Keum -hwa. These three works are connected by the concept of echo (which gives its title to the exhibition), reverb, resonance: whether the "voice" of the shaman spirits intends Andrea, tremors caused by the 2008 earthquake, or nuclear radiation that continue to contaminate the Fukushima region.
