In 2005 we included this video clip in the Triplicity dvd, dubbed with an audio track by the sound activist collective Ultra-red elaborating field recordings of protests. The sequence, tagged as “Global Space”, was aimed at emphasising the growing divide between the claim for the “horizontal” use of public space by the dispossessed peoples of the world and the domination of the “vertical” semantic use of urban space by corporate oligarchical powers. Here the attention was focused in particular on the emergence of a new paradigmatic embodiment of the concept of public space: the “space of exposure”, an asymmetric space designed to optimise the exposition of city users to the spectacle of goods, commoditized images and commercial messages, supplanting the concept of public space as a civic place of mutual exchange, confrontation and political representation. Times Square is probably the most emblematic example of such an emerging idea of public space, a crossroads bombarding the continuous stream of visitors with a flow of frenzied bright images.
