My first film told the story of the Lozells riots in October 2005. They sparked the largest investigation ever launched by West Midlands Police yet the national press largely turned a blind eye; causes of race, murder, sexual assault allegations, social inequality and local politics put commentators off.
Beauty Queen tells the overlooked story of those weeks before and after the event.
The work screened in front of local communities, all tranches of power in Birmingham, including judges, police detectives, journalists, councilors, doctors and local business people, with the express aim of engendering debate. The work screened internationally as part of drives to explore racial division, including at Colombia University . Belfast UVF and Catholic community centers, and various universities in England where it is kept in permanent collections.
