Harbor seal feeding on what appears to be a bat ray in the Alameda Point Channel on the south side of Alameda Point in Alameda, California. Another seal can be seen in the background at around the 30-second mark. Video recorded on May 18, 2014. Bat rays are also called sting rays. They feed on the bottom on crabs, clams, and mud shrimp.
A family (or group of families) of harbor seals has been hauling out on a dilapidated recreational dock nearby for over a decade. In 2014 another harbor seal pup was weaned here. The harbor seal haul out dock is slated for demolition in 2014 for construction of the Central Bay Ferry Maintenance Facility for the Water Emergency Transit Authority. No measures have been proposed as mitigation for the removal of the seal haul out.
