The 2014 DanceAfrica festival, in its 37th year at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, received its annual community welcome at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza on May 17, with free performances by students from the BAM-Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation partnership who have participated in the DanceAfrica education program. Through the program, more than 4,000 students have been given the opportunity to study the performing, visual, and literary arts as well as the cultural history of several countries in Africa and its diaspora.
