Alice Springs is the northern most destination of Linda Rive's 'Central Australian' postcard collection. It's also where she lives.
"I came to Australia in 1974. I was living in Adelaide and sending dozens of postcards to my parents in the UK. But it wasn't until I arrived in central Australia that I noticed the colour palette exploding, and of course I wanted to share this with my family... so I sent even more postcards."
"Then In 1981 I took my son back to meet Mum and Dad. I realised Mum had saved all of the postcards I'd sent her and upon reviewing them, I realised that I'd documented this massive social history of me and my life in central Australia. And so then I decided to make a project of it... that has lasted 39 years."
Linda has resolved to scan some of the postcards - those that relate to the people of the Western Desert language groups with whom she works - and then annotate them in the Ara irititja.com digital archive.
