"Drawing to Access Light" is a 25 minute student documentary, which explores the artistic expressions of two artists who have been impacted by mental health issues in different ways. Sarafin, a Mad Pride comic book artist makes highly detailed comics based on her experiences in mental health institutions after being diagnosed with psychosis. Jennifer, a photographer and visual artist is in the process of making an installation that is working through her memories of her father's struggle with depression and institutionalization. Through dialogues with each artist about their work and their artistic process, we learn about the oppressive attitudes and dynamics of institutional spaces and societal stigma as well as the subversive possibilities that art making can offer.
