Digital Escalator Panels (DEP) at the London Underground is a relatively new and untapped advertising medium. Thousands of people use the tube's escalator daily and are exposed to the DEPs, yet the content available on them are more often than not dull and uninspiring.
This is done in response to a brief by CSM BA Graphic Design Moving Image. The brief is to start with a paradox and communicate the idea of the chosen paradox via the DEPs.
Working in groups of two, the paradox we've chosen is "You got to get up to get down". The idea is to make the whole escalator ride a paradox: When people are going up the escalator, arrows on the screen will be going down and vice versa. Since the screen is often used for advertising. We imagined the work could be used for "dance mat" style video game and so we took reference from it, making the whole trip a disco ride. The aim is to catch attention and play with people's sense of direction.
A delayed live feed is also planned on the screen to play footage of the person going pass it in reverse so as to confuse them even more.
