The unsustainable use of natural resources can result in an increase in a country's GDP while it actually becomes poorer, if we account for the value of nature. The GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative recognises that legislators, through the exercise of their legislative and budgetary responsibilities, can play a central role in the transition to en economic model that takes into account the value of biodiversity and of ecosystem services.
Operating in a rapidly expanding group if industrialised and developing country, the Initiative works to advance the implementation and long-term integration of natural capital accounting into decision-making across all
government departments. The annual GLOBE Natural Capital Legislation Study, now at its second edition, reviews natural capital accounting policies from over 20 countries.
