"Translating Improvisation: Beyond Disciplines, Beyond Borders"
Seminar by Maruška Svašek "Creativity as Improvisation. Engaging with People and Things"
24 March 2014
1-2 pm, School of Law, Room 101
21 University Square
Dominant discourses of creativity have focused on the relative novelty of end products. By contrast, the perspective of ‘creativity as improvisation’ highlights the processual and relational nature of cultural production and the engagement of people with things. It emphasises that cultural producers always work within contexts of situational possibilities and constraints, whether aiming to reproduce existing designs or inventing entirely new ones. The presentation explores the usefulness of ‘improvisation’ as analytical tool to explore the production and appropriation of artefacts and images in interrelated settings of art, religion and museums.
