Painted Dog Pups Seen For The First Time- Virtual Safari # 226

After the brief snippet I teased you with in a recent Virtual Safari, we thought this would be a great opportunity to share some recent developments at the wild dog den.

Firstly, we experienced a mix of emotions. We were shocked and heartbroken to find that just ten days after seeing the mother bring out a day-old pup, the next bit of footage showed her carrying the limp, lifeless body of another pup. We couldn’t be sure if this was the same pup, as the size was comparable, despite the ten days that had passed.

We then scoured the camera trap footage and witnessed some fascinating behavior as the mother carried the pup around and back into the den multiple times over about three hours. Eventually, she carried it out of the den, and that was the last we saw of it.

Our spirits lifted a few days later when we caught our first glimpse of the surviving pups still deep in the burrow. This is hugely exciting news as the pups are now nearing the entrance to the den.

With the pups nearly ready to come out of the den, we were hopeful that we would see them out in the open soon. Little did we know that it would happen while we were down there recording the on-camera piece for this virtual safari.
