Luis Ramos started the Shorakapok Earth Keepers (SEK) in the summer of 2012 in an effort to beautify the natural areas of Inwood Hill Park and to encourage Native American residents of Inwood and Washington Heights to connect with their traditions through park stewardship projects and education. The SEK has led regular weekend clean-up projects for the park’s trails, as well as its natural stream. In addition, Ramos brings his Mobile Indigenous Library, which is a collection of books on Native American culture, particularly that of the Lenape – the people who lived in the Inwood area around the time that the first Europeans arrived – to all of his projects.
