Gretchen Pick, Artistic Director of Young Dance, and Independent Dancers Mike Cohn and Canae Weiss will share about inclusive dance opportunities and demonstrate translating movement to their own body and collaborative possibilities between dancers with and without disabilities. Young Dance Company will demonstrate how dancers with and without disabilities create different solutions to movement tasks that define the creative process as they work on a dance.
Young Dance Company (Minneapolis): youngdance.org/ is a youth modern dance company whose mission is to transform lives through movement. Young Dance engages youth in lifelong learning through activities which push the boundaries of the art and practice of dance.
Gretchen Pick, Artistic Director of Young Dance
Gretchen Pick is a dancer, teacher and choreographer in the Twin Cities since 1993. She holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, an M.F.A in Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is a certified Laban Movement Analyst. She has been the Artistic Director of Young Dance for 14 years and leads its All Abilities program which was started in 2011. She has created Integrated Dances for Young Dance and for performances with the University Choir and for the Minnesota Chorale in collaboration with The Dance Exchange. She also dances for Gomez Dance Group.
Mike Cohn, Independent Dancer, Young Dance Instructor
Mike Cohn was born in Iowa and raised in the Twin cities. Originally he started dancing as a form of therapy and socialization in 2010 and found over time that he learned techniques and skills that have broadened his scope of dance. He brings a slight twist with his dancing as he utilitzes a walker and sometimes a dance wheelchair to help him move across the dance floor.
He started dancing with the All Abilities Program through Young Dance in the Twin Cities and since has taken classes with Axis Dance Company in California and Zenon Dance Company in Minneapolis. He has performed in The Bridges Project with Minnesota Chorale, Celebrating Accessibility, In My Body Are These Islands with Croi Glan, Invitation to Belonging, AXIS Summer Dance Intensive, Choral Kaleidoscope and Young Dance Summer Belonging.
Canae Weiss, Independent Dancer
Canae Weiss received her dance training at Ballet Arts Minnesota in Minneapolis, the Conservatory of Dance Purchase College State University of New York, the University of Minnesota and Oriental Dance Intensive at The Cassandra School in Minneapolis. She also studied in the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensives Program where she was their first dancer who was deaf, the Washington Ballet and with Yola Rozynek and Alexandria Wailes at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Canae is a former company member of Ethnic Dance Theatre, and has performed and toured with Orim Israeli Folk Troupe for several years and a featured soloist with Voices of Sepharad, a guest performer with Judith Brin Ingber, Leili Prischet’s Hidden Yearning, and the Bridges Project with Minnesota Chorale. Occasionally, Canae sings in American Sign Language along with Minnesota Chorale choir at Orchestra Hall. She has been a guest teaching artist in the Minneapolis Public Schools, St. Louis Park High School, and dance teacher at Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. and Young Dance Company in Minneapolis. Canae is a 2014 recipient of an Arts Learning grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, in collaboration with Angela Olson, puppeteer and Liza Sylvestre, visual artist. These artists will demonstrate the possibilities of art as a communication tool and art as a means to build bridges between communities through a series of inclusive artist residencies with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing.
