How do you think of literacy? When you define being literate does just text-based knowledge come to mind? What about images and technology? What do you think the future holds in connecting the rapid integration of technology into human life and the definition of literacy through visual information such as video? Literacy as we know it today is defined as the “ability to read and write.” In the next few decades, this definition will no longer hold. With The visual field is going to impact everything: The future of technology lies in video, and therefore visual literacy. Visual stories will be a highly important media tool and presentations will need to be visual at an emotional and tactful level. One may go as far as to say text is bad when it comes to communicating online and in an everyday, social media sense. Our sense of literacy will change. Instead of defining literacy as the ability to read, write and analyze textual information, it will be the ability create, view and analyze video. Can we keep up? Today, young kids are now much more visually literate. This rapid shift to visual literacy will take place in the next generation or two. Along with video communication, one of the hugest implications in this shift is education. The education system has not caught up to the digital age yet. As children become much more visual literate, schools need to begin to teach learners how to most effectively use this shift away from traditional literacy. While drawing from a multitude of sources, this TED talk is meant to inspire viewers to embrace this rapid shift towards visual literacy so we can keep up and enjoy the bright and video-based future.
