Step7 of the countdown to the opening hike is pinning the righthand side of the trail as walking south along the FTA flagged route. The pins mark where to cut a six foot corridor for the trail. Placing each pin involves many considerations. Examples in the movie are preserving a Longleaf pine tree, improving trail flow, and avoiding a hole. Tom Daniel tells about pinning and shows how it is done. John Hooten, while logging out on a construction day, uses “trail eyes” to request repinning to avoid a hole.
The new trail officially opened on June 7, 2014, National Trails Day. It's happening along US Hwy 331 at Owl's Head Rd. Sign up for the opening hike is here: meetup.com/Florida-Trail-Choctawhatchee-Chapter/events/174370952/ where there are also photos.
