Performed by one female singer with the drone recorded through the skin of her neck. There’s a single phrase incanted on each filmstrip. Six film loops thread through the stairwell, the lengths of filmstrip spinning a kinetic and audible drawing. The films are mainly black with the projectors only emitting light when an incantation (on the edge of language) punctuates the length of film. At points the voices fall together in harmonic clusters and at other times there is just the deep sonority of a continuous drone resonating through the throat of the building.
The sculptural and sonic installation, one of a series made with 16mm film, is an explicit exploration of emotions drawing on various source material including my deceased sister’s sketchbooks. Her drawings find a clear visual language to describe her experience of living with the oscillations of mania and depression and the physical manifestation of anxiety.
