We had such a fun day on 4/26 interviewing parents about the challenges of being out and about with young children for One Day in Denver. We've just finished editing all of the footage into a short film about families' needs for what I call "baby havens": publicly accessible places where caregivers of infants and young children can comfortably retreat to breast or bottle feed, change diapers, soothe a crying child, take a brief rest, and refuel.
We got some great feedback on the idea and shaped the film around people's experiences in two different (easy to access) neighborhoods. Our on-the-street research revealed many factors that influence the comfort of parents and children in the city, from the condition of the sidewalks to the ubiquity of small and unsanitary portable toilets in places frequented by families. The next step is to document and rate all of the existing "baby havens" and develop strategies to create more where they are needed most.
