EXEMPLARY: 150 YEARS OF THE MAK -- FROM ARTS AND CRAFTS TO DESIGN
To mark the museum's jubilee, the MAK presents an inspiring juxtaposition between the tradition-steeped MAK Collection and contemporary avant-garde design.
At the MAK's invitation, nine globally renowned design pioneers have agreed to participate in an experiment to investigate the significance of a model exemplary collection as a source of inspiration, which was the original motivation for founding the museum. In the process, each pioneer will have discussions with a person of their choice—so-called "muses"—in which they will shed light on the future of the applied arts as well as on the perspectives of museums dedicated to the subject.
Z33—house for contemporary art founded by Jan Boelen is an institution without a collection. Freed from the conventional duties of a museum, it develops hot topical interdisciplinary projects and programs between contemporary art and design, meanwhile taking an experimental approach in addressing social issues. Z33 assumes a leading role within the cultural sector as a laboratory for discussion about the design of our world—a challenge that in Boelen's opinion is the task not only of design, but of society as a whole. Design for him is political to the core; it affects our production methods, our social structure, as well as our thought and feelings. When considering a collection of the future, Jan Boelen answers with a single object that reflects developments of the changing concepts of authorship, ownership, and (intellectual) property; in doing so he questions the museum as a site of a model collection. The selected cabinet chest by Commonplace is an allusion to the curiosity cabinet of the Renaissance, at the time a popular model for enhancing prestige, which horded rare naturalia and precious artefacts, an expression of power, and knowledge of the ruling élite. The cabinet chest is now enhanced, and updated by using new media and harbors examples of contemporary design that ultimately also demonstrate the limits of what is collectable.
