Europe's Eastern Neighbors
Europe is drawing consequences from the conflict between Russia and Georgia. The EU now wants closer ties to its eastern neighbors and to gradually bring Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, and Armenia into the European Union. EU-accession is still far off, but these countries will receive financial assistance to restructure their societies politically and economically. European Journal is broadcasting portraits of these countries in travelogues:
Georgia is still scarred by the devastation of war. Many of the people here are still living in refugee camps. Our journey begins in the buffer zone between South Ossetia and Georgia, where the security situation remains precarious. In a valley not far from the zone, wine-growers are still struggling to get production up and running again. But the capital Tiflis has recovered quickly. Luxury goods fill the shops, and things seem to be looking.
