“Every time I go to a movie, it’s magic, no matter what the movie’s about.” – Steven Spielberg
This July, The Loft celebrates the King of Summer Blockbusters, Steven Spielberg, with special screenings of eight of his biggest and most iconic films that forever changed the way we experience movies during the hottest months of the year. One of the most commercially successful filmmakers in the history of cinema, Spielberg (both as a producer and a director) has proved repeatedly that popular filmmaking and great filmmaking are not mutually exclusive concepts. A true fanboy at heart, Spielberg’s expertly-crafted summer thrill-rides conjure up a special kind of moviegoing magic, the kind that takes us back to the carefree days of childhood, when nothing in the world seemed more exciting than that thrilling moment when the theatre lights went down and we breathlessly anticipated the grand adventure about to unfold. Whether scaring audiences silly with terror classics like Jaws and Jurassic Park, reimagining space aliens as wondrous figures of hope in Close Encounters and ET, or rigging cinematic carnival rides like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies, Spielberg’s uncanny knack for combining exhilarating thrills with genuine emotion and storytelling savvy turned us all into kids again (at least for a couple of hours at a time) and helped define the Summer Blockbuster for generations of moviegoers.
