I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
O luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

Jo m'he acostumat a la nit.
He marxat amb pluja —i amb pluja he tornat.
He deixat enrere la més remota llum de la ciutat.

He vetllat pels ravals més tristos.
M'he topat el sereno en la seva ronda,
amb la mirada cota, per no excusar-me.

M'he aturat i els meus peus han guardat silenci
quan de lluny un sanglot de sobte interromput
planava sobre les cases d'un carrer pròxim,

mes no per fer-me tornar o dir-me adéu;
i encara més lluny, a una altura espectral,
un rellotge resplendent en el firmament

revelava que el temps no és bo ni dolent.
Jo m'he acostumat a la nit.
