An “extreme sport” exists in South Africa’s townships, which often results in amputations, or even death. Known as train surfing, thrill-seeking teenage boys perform unimaginable stunts atop commuter trains – at full speed. Anger management and manhood ritual: To exhibit their bravery, the boys literally risk lives and limbs.
The 27 year-old photographer started out with commercial photography and is the founder of the Made in Milan agency. In 2012 he won the Leica 24 × 36 Talents Award with his series The Death of Italian Horse Racing. His reportage on train surfers was short-listed for the Magnum and IdeasTap 30 under 30 competition. Casino is the first ambassador for Leica Camera Italia, and lives in Milan and Turin.
