Mexican Ghoulash (2003)
Single-channel video, 9'55, DVD, NTSC, color, sound
This video has been edited out of a series of eight hi-8 tapes of anonymous origin found together in the streets of Monterrey, Mexico. The fast paced editing traces the symptomatic relationship between the ordinary existence of a middle class family in Mexico and the hidden violence of everyday life.
Language, ideas, recurrent behavioral patterns and violence interweave within the framework of the particular socio-cultural context of an average, middle-class Mexican family through the “significant moments” they have chosen to record, and on the other hand, through the scenes and gestures performed exclusively for the occasion of being filmed.
The tapes and the found footage itself have been appropriated by the artist as recyclable material for the purpose of this work. The identity of the characters in the film has remained anonymous.
