In this lecture Ross Garnaut charts the history of China as a great power and sets the scene for the country’s new role on the world stage.
Garnaut has made a considerable contribution to Australia-China relations, serving as Australia’s ambassador to China from 1985 to 1988 and pioneering trade liberalisation policies with the country as a an economic advisor to the Hawke government.
In more recent times, Garnaut chaired a major climate change review commissioned by former opposition leader and now Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
