I originally created this matte painting as a traditional multi-plane image setup for a matte painting class and that version won runner up in its category at the Academy of Art University 2013 Spring Show. Both it and this revised 3D camera projection are a more detailed and serious sci-fi approach to my original “Cootiville” matte painting. I modeled the geometry in Cinema 4D and used ProjectionMan for the camera mapping. Fog, particle layers, subtle lens flares, and birds (courtesy of pond.com) were added in After Effects.

The concept is something I've been developing for a couple of years: Along the stagnant backwaters of a minor mold growth which floats, unbeknownst to it's inhabitants, within the confines of a circular glass petri dish, lies the microscopically small, go-nowhere town of Cootiville, home to a growing cast of lively characters. Somewhere over the horizon, through the wilds of a filamental forest and beyond a deep, glassy sea, lies the near-mythic city of Micropolis...
