Mississippi Lake is one of the largest lakes in Lanark County and has not just one, but two provincially significant wetlands. In this short film Dr. Keddy describes some of the services these wetlands provide that keep the lake healthy. Wetlands improve water quality, reduce flooding, generate fish, and enhance the diversity of wildlife. Dr. Keddy also briefly introduces the three kinds of wetlands found in the lake: swamp, marsh, and shallow water/aquatic. It is natural for water levels to change seasonally in lakes and rivers, and these changing water levels are vital to many species of wildlife. Cottage associations can help maintain the natural environment of lakes and wetlands by planning for the future and ensuring that lakes are wisely managed.
