Food as a lived tradition documents a performance piece cooking a family recipe. The performance in
based solely on following video projections of maternal family members: my mother and paternal
grandmother cooking the same dish. The knowledge of traditional South African food is an ambiguous
experience and therefore by following by performing the visual instructions a recipe is learnt through
the process of experience. By creating a visual documentation of a recipe, it is recorded in history,
along with any variations of processes between all three generations. The generational gap is
visualized in the different levels of video captured in the final video frame.
