This video is a montage of media I edited to showcase Shani Peter's “The People’s Laundromat Theater”, a public art project commissioned by a non-profit organization, The Laundromat Project. I connected several DVD players to the television screens of a Harlem Laundromat for the community to view independent media works that related to the Harlem demographic. The community participated by rating the works and joining our biweekly art workshops. The project concluded with a screening of the top-rated works at the Schomburg Center in Harlem followed by a panel discussion about the project and what it means to have a film festival in a laundromat. This project reflects my proposed interest in exploring how to open up a dialogue in a community by integrating video into a communal space.
