The evolution of The Chicken Coop began in 1985 at a local tavern in Plains. John and Debbie Stuchkus, after working many years for area restaurants, decided to venture out and promote the popular chicken wings with their famous recipe.
We've always had wings on our menus, but it wasn't until the spring of 1986 that the wings began to "fly" for us! After many experiments and upgrading of equipment, it was here that the buckets of wings were originated. We were the first in Wyoming Valley to offer this concept. People began traveling from miles around just to try these. We simply could not cook them fast enough. Long lines began to form every weekend. Orders were being taken for dozens, fifties, hundreds, and even by the thousands for parties. Our regular customers were actually getting addicted to the taste, thus resulting in our trademark, "Warning - These Wings Are Addicting!"
The small kitchen area we were working out of eventually was outgrown due to the demand for this part of the chicken that years ago used to be discarded. As the result of the need for a larger location, our Wyoming Store was founded in 1988. Renovations began and on February 8, 1988 we opened with a "wing and a prayer". Our logo of the chicken in the car was based on our three-year-old son's obsession with the "Herbie the Love Bug" Volkswagon car from the Walt Disney movies of the 70's.
The faithful customers that patronized us in Plains continued to follow us to the West Side. Groups of people flocked to the Coop nightly forming waiting lines outside the door. Therefore, the decision to look for a second location was made. After months of negotiating, during the summer of 1990, the Plains location was founded. We decided to go back to our "roost" to the East Side. Like Wyoming, major renovations were in order. After extensive remodeling, our doors opened on January 16, 1991, the same day the war began in Saudi Arabia. Despite the recession, our loyal customers continued to patronize us.
The Chicken Coop promises to give our valued customers the quality and consistency that we are noted for. All of our chickens are farmed raised in Southern Pennsylvania. They are delivered daily to insure freshness. This is why our wings are "Addicting"(soon to be world famous) and we are voted the Best in Wyoming Valley and Northeastern Pa. Millions have been sold and the story continues!!
