Echo Park Film Center | 3 Selections from Growing Healthy: White Sage, Papaya, Lemongrass | Super 8 film & Cyanotype Cloth hand-processed in white sage, instant papaya and lemongrass tea | Los Angeles, California | 2013/14
Growing Healthy is a series of short films created by Lisa Marr and Paolo Davanzo (aka The Here & Now) cataloging the medicinal benefits of traditional plants and herbs in different cultures ranging from Dit Da Jow, a Chinese herbal preparation to Stinging Nettle, a Russian remedy. Each segment focuses on a single plant, with informational interviews by community elders describing its traditional uses and a wide range of images of the plants being harvested and prepared.
For this segment, the Super 8 film depicting the white sage was actually processed using an eco-friendly developer made from white sage, rather than traditional toxic photochemistry.
Commissioned by LA Freewaves as part of "Long Live LA" with funding by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. The films were shown hourly on 2200 LA Metro buses in the spring of 2014.
