Not much video this time, mainly some photos to give a flavor of the day..... night ..... day! :D
The Silly Summer Ride for 2014 was the club original “SSR” from Maryport to Roker.
Route took us from the coast around the top end of the lakes to the back of Dashwater Falls, past Skiddaw House Hostel down to Threlkeld, up the Old Coach Road, thru Pooley Bridge, Askham, Duffton, up High Cup/Pennine Way, into Teesdale, then Weardale and finally up the Rookhope incline and the Sustrans C2C to Sunderland...... phew!
All in it took 22.5hr to complete, with just over 18hrs in the saddle.
There was quite a variance in recorded mileage on the various GPS devices tho, and unfortunately of the two traditional cycle computers used one was lost nr Askham the other re-set itself 2/3rds home.
As such the actual mileage isn’t known but I estimated it at around 135-140.
Anyway, we got away on time at 10:30pm on Friday and despite the usual bit of phaffing, couple of punctures, a crash or two, the odd mechanical and Spud’s rear tyre exploding just 3 miles from the end we made it to Roker 5 mins ahead of schedule at 9:00pm on the Saturday. Pretty amazing given the times and distances involved and how far we’ve often been behind on previous SSR’s.
Id love to say it was purely down to my fastidious planning, management and organisation of the event but credit has to go the guys doing it and Steve and the Watbus guys doing the support.
We were also luckily blessed with decent weather for a change.
No rain, predominantly dry trails, just the right temperature and a slight tail-wind most of the route too.
I thought we were going to have an unprecedented 100% finish rate this year but unfortunately Charlie had to abandon at Dufton 10hrs in due to severe saddle soreness (his language was a bit more descriptive but I don’t think the firewall will allow a direct quote!)
He was understandably gutted and of course was given due sympathy by being ribbed mercilessly for the rest of the day for being a such a pussy!
Saying that, he nearly had Marc joining him not long after, as for reasons only known to himself, Marc used “Deep Heat” as a chammy cream, much to his discomfort and our savage amusement!
Don’t think he’s gona repeat that one in a hurry.............
So, well done and congratulations go to:
• Andy McCoy
• Barry Parkinson
• Charlie Brannigan
• Dave Carlson
• Davey Brown
• Ian Tate
• Jack Redgate
• Kev Jones
• Marc Thompson
• Michael Powell

Plus a massive thanks to the support from:
• Steve Smith
• Colin & John from the Watbus
Another first was the post ride banter and enthusiasm about next years SSR.
Looks like the vote for 2015 is to repeat the Glentress – Springwell route we did in 2011

So looking forward to that one again already!
