Russel Harvey interviews sportscaster Tim Ryan, 1989, 60 min.
Growing up in Larchmont, NY, my brothers and I would spend hours on the street in front of our house playing softball, basketball and football with the other kids in our neighborhood. Sometimes, Jimmy Brown, a boy who lived across the street from us, would invite his classmate, Kevin Ryan, son of sportscaster Tim Ryan, over to play hoops. In 1989, I hosted and produced this one hour live interview with Tim Ryan. At the time, Tim was at the height of his incredible career as television's most versatile sportscaster. The longtime voice of the NY Rangers, and later the NY Islanders, as a network announcer for NBC and CBS, Tim covered the NHL, NBA, NFL, NCAA Football and Basketball, major tennis tournaments, and some of the most memorable boxing matches in history. Tim covered the Summer and Winter Olympics several times. An avid skier, Tim was the longtime voice of alpine skiing. Tim's sense of community and giving brought him to my studio. In addition to discussing his work as a sportscaster, Tim shared his passion as an environmentalist, and brought breathtaking video from Africa that he and his wife shot as they worked together to preserve African Wildlife through an organization they belonged to called "SAVE." I remain grateful to him for his kindness in helping me in my early days as a broadcaster.
