Derick Mackenzie journeys from the Western Isles of Scotland to the eastern edge of Turkey on the trail of his lost brother Donald, a self-styled evangelist adventurer who disappeared in mysterious circumstances while searching for the remains of Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat.
Donald's repeated quests to Ararat - identified in The Bible as the final resting place of the Ark after the great flood - had become increasingly obsessive. He returned again after disputed reports of a discovery by a Chinese excavation team. His last contact with his family was a text message sent from 12,000 feet up the mountainside. He was alone and a snowstorm was closing in. Since then they have heard nothing and had little assistance from the Turkish authorities. Did he succumb to the brutal winter weather or was he the victim of something more sinister? The only way to discover the truth, Derick believes, is to travel to Turkey to find out for himself.
My Brother the Ark Raider will follow Derick as he leaves his family in Stornoway to travel across Europe to Istanbul and on to the remote eastern border town of Dogubeyazit at the foot of Mount Ararat. The film documents his attempts to track down those who knew, loved and loathed Donald, a man whose charismatic but difficult personality provoked strong reactions in all those who met him. In his way stand an apathetic Turkish government, local militants and the shady groups who control the tourist industry in the area.
As we watch Derick trace Donald’s van, which was impounded along with his possessions after his disappearance, and track down his once-trusted mountain guide and companion Musa, who has mysteriously broken all contact with the Mackenzies, archive footage of Donald on previous Ararat trips will help to paint a portrait of the man Derick is so desperate to find.
But while the figure of Donald will loom large this is as much Derick’s story and his journey to find peace within himself. Since Donald's disappearance, Derick lost his beloved wife Margaret in childbirth, leaving him to bring up five kids on his own. My Brother the Ark Raider is a film about two brothers, two religions and one mountain that may hold the key to bring some closure to a family hit by tragedy.
